|The Thanksgiving Holiday is traditionally associated with turkey, food, and family... and it certainly seemed to be the way of things at the Thanksgiving Tournament. Starting off the weekend with heaping platters of Turkey and all the traditional fare, we played and ate our way through the weekend. While the rest of the country ate leftovers, we switched to a fish fry on Friday, and we were treated to a buffet featuring Tamales and tables full of food (Thanks to Craig and Sharon Amundson and Sally Langlois!) on Saturday. But enough about food (I'm still trying to work off those 3 pounds I gained!). With a total of $5445 in prize money to be won, shuffleboard's were just waiting to be played on!
We started play on Thanksgiving evening with an A-B Draw (Entry Fee only, no Calcutta) with eleven teams participating. 1st Place was won by the team of Nick Chaffin (NoCal) and DeVonna Golden (NV). Coming in 2nd Place were Kenny Hawkes and James O'Brien (both of SoCal).
Friday morning saw the start of the Handicapped Add to 1 Doubles. Ten teams participated in this event, with combined ratings running from 1 to 4. We came back on Saturday morning to watch the last three teams battle it out. Our winning team (with a combined rating of 3) was Phil Gardner (AZ) and Richie Eshillian (SoCal). In 2nd Place were Nick Chaffin and Barry Holmes (both of NoCal). Coming in 3rd was the team of Jim Martin and Kenny Hawkes (both of SoCal). In "Honorable Mention" 4th was the team of Paul Parks and Eric Chiles.
Saturday afternoon we played a 4 Man Draft Team event. There were six teams playing and I must say that as Tournament Director, I have to thank the six team captains who provided me with quite a few chuckles as they drafted their teams. The team captains were Paul Parks, Jim Golden, Jim Martin, Craig Amundson, Nick Chaffin, and Joe Muniz. Now there's some very serious people in that group - but when you throw in Joe Muniz and his occasional comments, you're bound to have a few laughs. Play commenced and teams cheered each other on until the last two teams fought it out. Play ended shortly before midnight. In 1st place was the team of Paul Parks, Eric Chiles, Allan Healey, and Jeff Delphia. The 2nd place team consisted of Craig Amundson, Paul Obermiller, Dan Childs, and Todd Gareau (in his first tournament).
I would like to thank our visiting players: Ted, Manny, and Ted Jr Canada, Phil Gardner, Paul Obermiller - all from Arizona. Jim and DeVonna Golden, Paul and Stevie Parks - from Nevada. Nick Chaffin and Barry Holmes from North California. And the players who came in from all over Southern California.
Thanks to Kenny Hawkes for handling our Auctions! Great job, Kenny! And my special thanks to Jeff Delphia who jumped in and handled board maintenance as our Garry Gareau became ill just before the tournament.
